About Mole Smash
Whack-a-mole machines have been a fixture of arcades and fairgrounds since the 1970s, and Mole Smash brings the same reflex test to your browser. Moles pop out of nine holes for a moment, and your job is to tap them before they disappear.
Each round lasts 30 seconds. Brown moles score one point and golden moles score three, but golden moles stay up for a shorter time. As the clock runs down, moles appear more often and hide faster, so the final ten seconds are the busiest. There is no penalty for tapping an empty hole, so the only way to lose points is to be too slow.
The game trains reaction time and hand-eye coordination. Players who score well tend to keep their eyes on the middle of the board instead of chasing individual holes, and they rest a finger above the grid rather than far away from it. The hit area for each mole is generous, so taps on a phone do not need to be pixel-perfect. Your best score is saved in your browser, and a round takes only half a minute, which makes it easy to try again.
Tips and strategies
- Keep your eyes on the centre of the board and use your peripheral vision to spot new moles.
- Prioritise golden moles — they are worth three brown ones but disappear faster.
- Do not tap empty holes; stay ready and wait for the mole to appear.
- Use one finger on a phone and keep it hovering above the board to cut your reaction time.
