About Brick Breaker

Brick Breaker descends from Breakout, released by Atari in 1976, in which a ball bounces off a paddle to destroy a wall of bricks. The idea has been rebuilt many times since, and it remains one of the most satisfying ways to spend a few minutes.

Here you get three lives and an endless series of levels. The wall has six rows of eight bricks, and bricks in the upper rows are worth more points. From level two the top two rows take two hits to break, and the ball gets faster each level up to a cap. Where the ball meets the paddle controls its angle, so you can aim: hit it with the edge for a wide angle and with the middle for a straight shot.

A classic technique is to open a tunnel along one side so the ball gets behind the wall and bounces between the bricks and the ceiling, clearing many at once for little effort. Use the mouse or the arrow keys, or drag on a phone, to move the paddle, and tap or press space to launch. The collision code checks the ball several times per frame so it should not pass through bricks even at the highest speed.

Tips and strategies

  • Hit the ball with the edge of the paddle to change its angle and reach awkward corners.
  • Try to carve a tunnel up one side — the ball then bounces around behind the bricks and clears many at once.
  • Stay near the centre of the screen between shots so you can reach either side.
  • Watch the ball's horizontal speed, not just its height — it tells you where it will land.

Brick Breaker FAQ

How do I launch the ball?

Click, tap, or press Space. Before launch the ball rests on your paddle.

How many levels are there?

There is no limit. Each new level makes the ball faster and the top bricks tougher.

Why did the ball go through a brick?

It should not — the game checks collisions several times per frame. If a game ever feels off, press Restart.
